09/04/2010 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Defensive backs Quintin Demps and Macho Harris, both of whom were contributing members of the Philadelphia Eagles last season, were among the players released as the team pared its roster to the 53- player maximum on Saturday.
Demps, who played in 25 games for the Eagles over two seasons, lost his job as the primary kickoff return man last season and could not navigate a crowded field of secondary candidates during the 2010 preseason.
Harris' fall from grace was a bit more steep, as the 2009 fifth-round pick out of Virginia Tech went from an eight-game starter last season to off the roster altogether. Harris also assisted on kickoff returns last season.
Also released on Saturday were wide receiver Chad Hall, tight end Cornelius Ingram, guard Max Jean-Gilles, defensive end Eric Moncur, wide receiver Jordan Norwood, defensive tackle Jeff Owens, guard Dallas Reynolds, center A.Q. Shipley, guard Fenuki Tupou and wide receiver Kelley Washington.
Jean-Gilles, who was released in order for the team to reduce its roster to 53 players before it was able to complete a trade involving guard Stacy Andrews, is expected to be re-signed to the team on Sunday.
The team was also involved in three trades on Saturday. The Eagles sent an undisclosed draft choice to Baltimore in exchange for outside linebacker Antwan Barnes, dealt Andrews to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2011 pick, and sent linebacker Tracy White to the New England Patriots for a 2012 selection.
On Friday, the Birds obtained guard Reggie Wells in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals.
Dropped on Friday were running back J.J. Arrington, wide receiver Dobson Collins, defensive end Pannel Egboh, tight end Nate Lawrie, running back Martell Mallett, tackle Jeraill McCuller, cornerback David Pender, cornerback Geoff Pope, defensive tackle Boo Robinson, and safety Anthony Scirrotto.
Defensive end Victor Abiamiri (knee) was placed on the Physically-Unable-to- Perform (PUP) list on Saturday and will not be eligible to play in the team's first six games.
Philadelphia will open its 2010 season next Sunday, when it plays host to the Green Bay Packers.

In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.
It is called the "pointspread."
Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.
But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.
A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.
In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .
